SENIORS - FINAL ASSIGNMENTS

Seniors, the end is near, and there are a few assignments left to schedule. Here is a list of everything due in the next two weeks:

Letter to Future Self - this is an OPTIONAL assignment, but I encourage you to take it seriously. As discussed in class, this letter will be sent to you in about five years. Think about what you'd like to tell yourself five years from now. For example, maybe it would be interesting to reflect on your plans at the time, what values you held dear, what you wanted to remember. In addition, you might think about your current likes/dislikes related to pop culture -- a playlist of favorite songs, for example. Because USB thumb drives are small, you might include one with pictures, music, etc. -- a sort of time capsule of your senior year (or at least the last month of it). This letter should be turned in an enclosed, addressed envelope. I will apply postage in the future. This letter is due THURSDAY, 4/19.

Final Revision Paper - this is a revision of either the Truman Show Analysis OR the MLK "I Have a Dream" Analysis. Bring TWO printed copies of your essay to class on THURSDAY, 4/19. The final revised copy should copy/pasted into a new file named "lastname-final revision" and printed for FRIDAY, 4/20.

Career Update - a one-page addendum to your research paper, updating your plans for college and beyond. Be sure to include what you originally planned and if that's changed. Whether plans have changed or not, please explain why and what steps you've taken towards reaching your goal -- i.e. where you've decided to attend and what major you've declared. This will be written in class FRIDAY 4/20, shared as "lastname-update" and printed.

SCRAPBOOK - This project can be completed as a PowerPoint (or some other electronic format) or it can be the traditional 12x12 scrapbook. You must have at least 16 pages devoted to your four high school years (roughly four pages each). Please include information from the following areas:

  • School Life - activities, sports, academics, clubs, trips, etc.
  • Real Life - trips, church, friends, family, clubs, etc.
  • US/World Events - major news, sports, and entertainment events
  • Trends and Hobbies - interests, activities, favorites (personal and societal)
You can work on this in class on Monday, and you have all week out of class. This assignment is creative, but it will be graded based on completion of the requirements.

This is due on MONDAY, 4/30 (Senior Finals).
You can pick them up on FRIDAY, 5/4 (Slide Show).

O Brother, A Response Paper

Hello Freshmen... Your assignment for the weekend is to write a 250-word (one page) response paper on O Brother, Where Art Thou . Please type and format according to MLA. You may choose from the two topics below: (1) Respond to the lyrics of one song from the film. Using your lyric sheet (or the internet ), connect the lyrics of one song to the movie's characters/setting/events. In other words, explain how the lyrics are relevant to the film. (2) Choose one of the historically relevant elements of the movie and look up an article on Wikipedia . Print out the article; then, summarize it and connect it to the movie's characters/setting/events. Be careful not to plagiarize the article, which should be stapled to your reponse. Ideas discussed in class include The Great Depression, con artist, chain gang, Populism (George Wallace, Huey P. Long, W. Lee O'Daniel), Ku Klux Klan (William Joseph Simmons), and George "Babyface" Nelson.

Juniors ~ Defining "American"

Overview Your next major assignment is to write a two-three page essay defining "American." The essay's thesis should attempt to answer the question, "What does it mean to be American?" The essay should be typed, double-spaced and formatted according to MLA . Your Topic The word is used to describe our culture, politics, food, style, music -- even ourselves. But what do we mean? Usually the connotation is positive, but the question applies to the negative use of the word, as well; if we call someone or something un-American, or anti-American, what exactly do we mean? What is the "American Dream," and in what ways do we pursue it? Do terrorism and illegal immigration threaten our "American Way of Life"? If so, then how is that defined? Could you make a list of "American Values." What is American food? American music? Process The process for this paper has already begun. First, you read part of de Crevecoeur's essay , a
