Strange Fruit

Because the song was mentioned in class, I though it would be helpful to have a copy of the lyrics. The song was first published as a poem in 1937 by Lewis Allan, the pen-name of a Jewish schoolteacher from the Bronx. It was first performed by Billie Holiday in 1939. Here are the lyrics: Southern trees bear strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant south, The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh, Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.
