Your prompt for tomorrow is the following:
With the advent of cell phones and social networking,
people are communicating with each other more than ever – through texting and
Facebook – but are they as “connected” as ever? Are we experiencing what Birkerts
calls “language erosion,” losing the ability to communicate effectively
even though it’s easier now than ever? Are we losing our sense of
historical perspective, and are we losing our privacy and freedom in exchange
for these new forms of communication?
Write a 500-word essay in response to these questions,
using both Birkert’s essay “Into the Electronic Millennium” and the article
you’ve provided. You are also welcome
to reference any of the issues we discussed in class, including but not limited
to multi-tasking, the technological-generation gap, cyber bullying and internet addiction.
