Junior: Using Iambic Pentameter

Your assignment is to write a poem describing a someone from contemporary society. Refer to the "General Prologue" to The Canterbury Tales as your model. The character should be someone who does a particular job or serves some specific purpose in our society.

Your poem should be at least 14 lines, in rhyming couplets. Please include the following:

description of the person's job/position
character traits -- personality, temperament, morals, etc.
physical description -- including uniform/clothing

Remember that almost any line from Shakespeare is in iambic pentameter:

Bring a TYPED rough draft on Friday 9/27.
The final draft is due on Monday 9/28.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

What better way to spend Halloween than reading a story that begins with a beheading? For the next week or so, we'll be discussing Arthurian Literature, beginning with a look at " Sir Gawain and the Green Knight ," the anonymous tale of a test of courtly love, involving a supernatural green knight and a bet. For more information on the poem, read this introduction . I've also included a prose translation that you can compare with the verse translation we have in our book.

Homework

Seniors Your exam is on Thursday, and your final essay is on Friday. I'll talk more about the essay in class tomorrow. Also, the senior auction project lacks one more important detail - your memories! We will spend a bit of time tomorrow in class writing down some of your fondest memories of your senior year, and the rest of your time at RO. Sophomores Read "Lines Composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey," and complete the questions at the end of the selection in your book. As always, please use complete sentences and cite frequently from the text.
