Seniors ~ Editorial

Your next assignment is to write a letter to the editor (or an editorial) regarding a local problem. By "local" I mean pertaining to your community -- school, city or state. Please follow the classical model for rhetoric discussed in your book on pages 13 and 14:
  1. Introduction - introduces the subject, piques interest of the reader, establishes the authority of the author [appeal to ethos]
  2. Narration - provides background, establishes the problem, connects to the audience [appeal to pathos]
  3. Confirmation - develops the argument, provides evidence [appeal to logos]
  4. Refutation - anticipates the opposition, lends credence, refutes claims [appeals to pathos and logos]
  5. Conclusion - brings the essay to a satisfying close, answers the question "so what?" [appeals to pathos]
This should be between 400 and 500 words, formatted according to MLA. You may want to look on The News Star's "Voices and Views" page for recent examples, or to generate a topic.

Typed rough draft is due MONDAY 11/17.

Senior End-of-Year Schedule!

Seniors, the end is near, and there are a few assignments left to schedule. Here is a list of everything due in the next two weeks: Career Update - a one-page addendum to your research paper, updating your plans for college and beyond. Be sure to include what you originally planned and if that's changed. Whether plans have changed or not, please explain why and what steps you've taken towards reaching your goal -- i.e. where you've decided to attend and what major you've declared. This is due WEDNESDAY 4/24. Letter to Future Self - this is an OPTIONAL assignment, but I encourage you to take it seriously. As discussed in class, this letter will be sent to you in about five years. Think about what you'd like to tell yourself five years from now. For example, maybe it would be interesting to reflect on your plans at the time, what values you held dear, what you wanted to remember.
